by Dr Russell Arnott and Celine Van Weelden with foreword by Maya Plass at The Marine Biological Association.
All our seas feed into one true ocean, interconnected and interdependent. Producing over half of the world’s oxygen, our planet’s ocean is a natural and vital wonder. As well as supporting a vast array of life, it plays a crucial role in regulating our weather and climate and it supplies us with food, medicine, recreation and a means of transport. Now it is under threat from many sides, such as overfishing, climate change and pollution to name a few.
From the still waters of the Caribbean coastlines to the choppy North Sea, the Polar regions to the coral reefs, this book celebrates the essential ecosystems of our ocean around the world, providing a pictorial record of this wondrous world that needs our protection.
Having studied at the National Oceanography Centre, Russell went on to work as a commercial oceanographer. Retraining to become a secondary science teacher, Russell later left formal education to work with Incredible Oceans; a marine education non-profit. He is also on the board of directors for the European Marine Science Educators’ Association.
During her five years of working with the World Cetacean Alliance and its educational partner, Incredible Oceans, Celine has worked as a marine educator and science communicator with marine organisations across the globe. Having studied Environmental Sciences at Leiden University College NL, Celine’s expertise and passion focuses on the impacts of climate change on marine mammals.
Maya Plass has been a dedicated marine science communicator and educator for over twenty years. During this time she has established her own marine education business, digressed into TV broadcasting and became an author of seashore books. Ultimately, her experience and passion in communicating marine science has led her to become Head of Communications at The Marine Biological Association (Devon, UK).
Buying Ocean Endangered directly from Incredible Oceans allows us to keep doing our crucial work; educating people about the importance of our ocean.

Absolutely covered in ocean creatures, full of amazing pictures. It walks you through the entire ocean from the coast to the deep sea. But unlike some of the other books I’ve read, this is a people-based book. It is written from the point of view of how we as people interact with all the different levels of the ocean. Very informative, very blunt about the realities that the ocean is facing at the moment, and takes you on a journey on how humans are connected to the ocean and how we are having an impact. But then also gives you how awesome the oceans are and how we can protect it. And giving that information to people is really important. I just think it’s a really lovely book.

In my humble opinion: a book people everywhere should have on their coffee tables in order to spark conversation about our ocean’s wonders while entertaining their friends and family.
Ocean Endangered is a most necessary book, that clearly explains what’s at stake, while at the same time beautifully describing the most mesmerising creatures in our ocean. A must-read for all.
